Why Consider ADHD Medication?
For many people, ADHD medication can be life-changing. It can improve focus, emotional regulation, motivation and self-esteem. Not by changing who you are, but by helping your brain work the way it’s meant to.
Medication isn’t right for everyone, but when used correctly and carefully monitored, 70–80% of people experience significant symptom improvement (CDC, 2024).
At The ADHD Service, our approach is always personal, safe and clinically led, every prescription and review follows NICE guidance.

FAQs
Your ADHD questions answered
What happens during the ADHD treatment plan appointment?
Your initiation appointment is a detailed one-hour consultation with one of our ADHD clinicians. They’ll review your ADHD diagnosis report, full medical history and current medications.
Together, you’ll explore treatment options, discuss how ADHD medication works, and agree on a safe, personalised plan. If medication is suitable, your clinician will issue your first prescription during the appointment.
They may also discuss non-medicated options such as therapy or coaching and connect you with an ADHD Service trusted partners through our support network.
How should I prepare for my treatment plan appointment?
Before your appointment, please complete both the Medical Screening Questionnaire and Patient Information & Consent Form. You’ll need to include your current blood pressure, height, and weight, which can be taken at your GP, pharmacy, or at home using a monitor.
Ensure you are in a quiet, private space with a stable internet connection for your online session. Having your diagnosis report, medication list, and any relevant medical records ready helps your clinician make a safe and informed decision.
Who will I see at my treatment plan appointment – a doctor or a nurse prescriber?
All our clinicians are qualified and experienced ADHD prescribers.
Most appointments are led by Specialist Nurse Prescribers, but in some cases, such as patients with complex medical histories or co-existing psychiatric conditions, your initiation will be led by a Consultant Psychiatrist. Our Patient Support Team will triage your information beforehand to ensure you’re booked with the right clinician for your needs.
Will I receive my prescription during the appointment?
In most cases, yes. If your clinician confirms that ADHD medication is appropriate, your first prescription will be issued during the appointment and sent electronically to our partner pharmacy for dispensing.
Prescriptions are clinically checked twice and delivered directly to your home within 48 hours.
If further clinical checks are needed before prescribing, your clinician will explain this and confirm next steps.
What if I decide not to start medication after the appointment?
That’s absolutely fine, your initiation appointment is about informed choice, not pressure.
Your clinician will take time to talk you through each recommended medication, explaining how it works, what benefits it can bring, and any potential side effects or risks to be aware of. You’ll have the opportunity to ask questions and discuss your feelings or any concerns in detail before making a decision.
If you decide not to begin medication, your clinician will also explore non-medicated treatment options, such as therapy, ADHD coaching, and behavioural or lifestyle support. These approaches can help with focus, organisation, emotional regulation, and confidence.
We understand that starting medication is a big decision. Whether you choose to proceed now or prefer to wait, we’ll make sure you have all the facts, support, and guidance you need to make the right choice for you.
If you’d like ongoing support without medication, our Patient Support Team can help you connect with trusted therapists and coaches from our partner network.
What happens after the treatment plan appointment?
Following your initiation appointment, your clinician will agree a personalised follow-up plan with you. If medication is prescribed, you’ll begin your treatment and start the titration phase, a period of careful monitoring and adjustment to find your optimal dose.
Your first titration review should be booked for around 3–4 weeks after your initiation appointment. You’ll receive an email reminder with a secure link to book your titration session online at a time that suits you. You’ll continue to book your titration reviews this way until your medication and symptoms are stable.
During this phase, you’ll also be asked to complete a short clinical progress questionnaire before each review. This helps your clinician monitor how you’re responding to medication, measure benefits, and identify any side effects early.
At each titration appointment, your clinician will use this data, along with your feedback, to fine-tune your medication, ensuring it remains safe, effective, and tailored to your individual needs.
What happens during a titration appointment?
Your titration appointment is a focused review where your clinician checks how you’re responding to your ADHD medication and whether any adjustments are needed.
They’ll ask about your concentration, sleep, appetite, mood, and any side effects. Together, you’ll discuss how the medication feels day-to-day, what’s improved, and where challenges remain.
Using your clinical progress questionnaire and feedback, your clinician will either maintain your dose or make a safe adjustment to move closer to your optimal balance.
How often will I have titration appointments?
Most patients have a titration review every 3–4 weeks, though this can vary depending on how your body responds to the medication. This schedule ensures your clinician can monitor your progress and safety closely while avoiding unnecessary disruption to your routine.
Typically, the full titration phase lasts 6–8 weeks, but your clinician will continue reviews until your medication is stable and effective.
What should I prepare before my titration review?
Ahead of your appointment, please complete your clinical progress questionnaire, which helps your clinician understand how you’ve been feeling since your last session.
It’s helpful to make notes about:
- Any changes in focus, motivation, or emotional control.
- Side effects such as appetite changes, sleep, or headaches.
- How your ADHD medication has affected home, school, or work life.
Having this information ready ensures your clinician can make the best possible adjustments.
What if I experience side effects or the medication doesn’t feel right?
Mild side effects such as appetite changes or temporary sleep disruption are common early in treatment and usually settle as your body adjusts.
If you experience unexpected or concerning side effects, contact our Patient Support Team using the details in your booking confirmation email. They will liaise with your clinician to review your case promptly.
During titration, your clinician will assess both benefits and side effects at each review, adjusting your dose or switching medication if needed to ensure safety and comfort.
How will I know when I’ve reached a stable dose?
You’re considered stable when your symptoms are well-managed, side effects are minimal, and no further dose changes are required.
Your clinician will confirm this based on your feedback and results from the progress questionnaires. Once stable, you’ll move onto 6/12 month clinical reviews to maintain ongoing safety and long-term benefits.
What happens after I finish the titration process?
Once titration is complete and your dose is stable, your clinician will outline your next review plan.
This includes:
- A six-month clinical review for long-term safety and well-being.
- Access to ongoing prescription renewal via our secure online system.
You’ll also have access to non-medicated support options, such as ADHD coaching or therapy through our partner network, to help you continue progressing.
